Vice President / President Elect 2020 Candidates

Mary Leonard, MD, MSCE

Mary Leonard, MD, MSCE, is the Arline and Pete Harman Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics and the director of the Maternal Health Research Institute at Stanford University School of Medicine, as well as the Adalyn Jay Physician in Chief at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford. An APS member since 2017, Dr. Leonard is a distinguished investigator, an expert clinician and a respected mentor. Currently a council member for the International Pediatric Nephrology Association, Dr. Leonard has also held a council position for the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology. Energetic and collaborative, Dr. Leonard is a compassionate clinician and researcher who cares deeply about improving the health and well-being of children everywhere. 

Steven Miller, MD, CM, MAS, FRCPC

Steven P. Miller, MD, CM, MAS, FRCPC, is the Head of the Division of Neurology and Centre for Brain & Mental Health at the Hospital for Sick Children and the Senior Scientist at the Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute in Toronto, as well as a Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Toronto. An APS member since 2015, Dr. Miller previously served as President and Vice President of SPR, where he worked to expand to an inclusive breadth of child-health research through programming and the annual meeting and worked closely with APS through joint council initiatives. Passionate about mentoring the next generation of clinician-scientists, Dr. Miller hopes to increase APS’s relevance across disciplines and strengthen partnerships with related societies.

Gary Freed, MD, MPH

Gary L. Freed, MD, MPH, is the Percy and Mary Murphy Professor of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine and Professor of Health Management and Policy in the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. With more than 25 years of experience in children’s health services research, Dr. Freed has been the principal investigator of numerous federal, state and foundation-funded grants. An APS member since 2004, he currently serves on the APS Committee on Diversity and Inclusion and as an APS Trustee of the International Pediatric Research Foundation. He previously served as President of SPR and has been active on committees with the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Board of Pediatrics and the Academic Pediatric Association. As a council member, Dr. Freed hopes to further improve APS and provide a more meaningful and responsive experience to members in the face of a rapidly changing field of child health.

Catherine Gordon, MD, MSc

Catherine M. Gordon, MD, MSc, is the Division Chief of Adolescent Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital and Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. An APS member since 2014, she previously sat on the APS Nomination Committee, directed the APS/SPR Student Research Program and served as Principal Investigator for a T35 grant funded by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver NICHD. In 2015, she was honored with the Thomas A. Hazinski Distinguished Service Award by SPR for this work. As a council member, Dr. Gordon would prioritize the development of activities that invigorate the pipeline of pediatric researchers, including expanding opportunities for diversity.
